If you’ve ever held a challenge coin, you know it’s more than just a piece of metal—it’s a symbol of honor, unity, and tradition. Challenge coins have a rich history, dating back to military service, where they were used to signify camaraderie and recognition. Over time, this tradition has extended to first responders, law enforcement, and even local organizations as a way to commemorate their values and achievements.
Last year, at the Roslyn Farmers Market, I had the incredible honor of being approached by Aaron Lowe, the Fire Chief of Kittitas County Fire & Rescue (KCFD7). He asked if I would be willing to let them use my artwork for their newest challenge coin. Without hesitation, I said yes! As someone who believes in celebrating the things you love, this opportunity was a special way to give back to a community I hold dear. Seeing my artwork take shape in new forms is always a joy, but this particular project felt extra meaningful—what better way to honor our firefighters than with a lasting token of appreciation?

The Meaning Behind the Coin
The KCFD7 challenge coin is a reflection of the department’s deep-rooted values and dedication to our community. One side of the coin proudly displays the department's core values: Integrity, Professionalism, and Accountability—principles that define the brave men and women who serve our county. The coin also features a nod to history, marking the establishment of KCFD7 in 1980. Behind these elements, the stunning Stuart Mountain Range serves as a backdrop, a reminder of the resilience and strength required to serve in a rugged and beautiful place like Kittitas County.
Flip the coin over, and you’ll find a piece of my own artistic journey—Peoh Point, our beloved Cle Elum Mountain. This was the first drawing I ever created in my collection, making it incredibly special to see it take on a new life in this project. Peoh Point stands as a beacon in our region, a place where locals and visitors alike find inspiration. Now, it serves as a symbol of appreciation and recognition for the firefighters who dedicate their lives to protecting us.

Honoring Our Local Firefighters
Firefighters are the backbone of our community. Whether responding to wildfires, house fires, or medical emergencies, they put their lives on the line to keep us safe. Many of these heroes serve on a volunteer basis, giving their time and energy to ensure that when disaster strikes, help is on the way. KCFD7 is always looking for dedicated individuals to join their ranks—whether as a full-time career or as a volunteer. If you’ve ever considered stepping up to serve, I encourage you to visit their website and learn more about how you can make a difference.

A Heartfelt Thank You
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to KCFD7 for allowing me to be part of this project and for the work they do every day. It is an honor to contribute in this small way and to see my artwork become a token of appreciation for our local heroes.
And to you, dear reader—thank you for taking the time to learn about this special challenge coin and the incredible people it represents. Let’s continue to celebrate and support the things we love, including the brave firefighters who keep our beautiful home safe.
Here’s to Kittitas County, its stunning landscapes, and the extraordinary people who make it such a wonderful place to live!
